The first step toward earning your Scrum Master certification is to take the Certified ScrumMaster® course. It is a 16-hour, live-online classroom training that teaches Scrum values, best practices, and applications, providing a level of expertise above and beyond that of typical project managers. Courses are offered as two-day weekday, two-day weekend or weekday evening courses.
After completing the course, you will take an online test to assess your understanding of the CSM® Learning Objectives. Upon successfully passing the CSM test, you will be able to download and print a copy of your CSM certification and become a member of Scrum Alliance®.
Attending a Certified Scrum Product Owner® course is the first step in your CSPO journey. This course is a 16-hour, live-online class in an interactive format. Courses are offered as two-day weekday, two-day weekend or weekday evening courses. After completing the course, you will have an account created in Scrum Alliance where you will be able to download and print a copy of your CSPO certification. At this time, there is no test requirement to earn a CSPO certification.
Yes, the last step for the Scrum Master certification is to pass an online test Your qualifications will automatically be shared with the Scrum Alliance and you’ll receive a test link via email after completing the training on Day Two. After you pass the exam, you’ll receive another email from the Scrum Alliance to accept their terms and conditions.
No exam is needed for the CSPO certification.
After you receive the test link, the student has 90 days and two attempts to pass the exam. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions that must be completed in one hour. The student must get 37 out of 50 correct answers to pass. 99% of our attendees pass on the first try!
The CSM test is based on the Scrum Guide. We suggest reviewing your notes from class and thoroughly reviewing the Scrum Guide again before taking the test. Access the Test Content Outline here.
It’s important that people understand Scrum as a framework for agility.
If your focus is on how your team plans and delivers on the requirements, take the CSM first. This course will give you clarity on how and why Agile is effective in planning projects and products with your teams. It helps you learn a new operating model on increasing planning and delivery effectiveness.
If your focus is on what your team plans and delivers, take the CSPO first. This course will give you clarity on who your customer is, what problem are you solving for them, and how to prepare these requirements so that your Agile team can build the right things.
Yes, after completing the two-day training you will be eligible to take the certification exam. A link will be sent to you by Scaled Agile to take the online exam. Students have a 30-day window to access the exam.
Test takers have 90 minutes to complete the 45 multiple choice question exam. A score of 80% (36 correct answers out of 45) is required to pass. Each retake attempt is $50 and is paid to Scaled Agile. The second attempt can be done immediately after the first attempt. If a third attempt is required, the student must wait 10 days to re-test.
To participate in the online course, you’ll need the following:
-
A quiet, comfortable place to be for the duration of the class
-
An area without distractions (Be mindful of managing potential interruptions like children or pets!)
-
Computer (desktop or laptop, though using two screens is recommended if possible)
-
Camera and microphone (we’ll have virtual breakout rooms)
-
Headset to filter out room noise
-
Internet connectivity
-
Some familiarity with using Zoom and collaboration tools like Mural or Miro
We ask that you participate like you would if you were in an in-person class with a punctual arrival, full attention and participation (video required) during class time.
Our trainers are mindful of giving breaks throughout the sessions to give everyone a chance to step away to stretch their legs, make a phone call, etc. If you foresee needing more time, please notify your trainer.
Full attendance on-camera is a requirement to earn your certification in any of our classes. If you expect you’ll need to miss class time, please contact us to discuss available rescheduling options.
In order to keep our courses interactive and fun, our coaches have incorporated easy-to-use websites and online collaboration tools to support their lessons, including video breakout rooms to engage and collaborate with your classmates and dive deeper into discussions.
Two days before your class, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download Zoom and their preferred collaboration tool. We ask that you test these tools on your computer in advance of the class to ensure a smooth beginning to your training.

There are 2 ways to renew your Scrum Alliance certification:
-
Earn another Scrum Alliance certified certification. Earning another certification will automatically renew any lower level certification. For example: If you already have your CSM and earn a CSPO or A-CSM, your existing CSM will automatically renew for another two years.
-
Earn and claim SEUs (Scrum Education Units), and pay the renewal fee. You can learn more about SEUs on the Scrum Alliance website. Eligible educational activities can include attending a meetup (we host a monthly one), reading a book, watching a video, attending a conference or taking advantage of Scrum Alliance’s free e-learning. Each time you further your education, you can claim these hours on your Scrum Alliance member profile. Generally, one hour of education equals one unit. Please refer to Scrum Alliance for official information.
-
Note: Renewal is only required for the highest-level certification that you hold; any lower level certifications will automatically renew when you submit payment for your highest-level certification.
Certification (Two-Year Term) | SEUs Required | Renewal Fee |
---|---|---|
Professional (CSM-SM, CSP-PO, CP-CSD, CSP Or CAL II) | 40 | $250 |
Advanced (A-CSM, A-CSPO, A-CSD) | 30 | $175 |
Foundational (CSM, CSPO, CSD) | 20 | $100 |
Certified Agile Leadership (CAL-E, CAL-T Or CAL-O) | 10 | $50 |
Your SAFe certification is good for one year from the date of your training (Note: not the date when you pass the exam).
To renew your certification, log into your Scaled Agile account and click on the ”Renew Now” button on the homepage (located at the top of the homepage). If you do not see this button, you can log in and visit this page here.
You will then be presented with the membership renewal options so you can select the membership level that works best for you.
Scaled Agile is constantly revising and improving their framework. You can renew certifications that were achieved on earlier versions of the framework; however, there will be no supporting resources available for this certification. We recommend retaking the newest version of the course and re-certifying. You can search for available classes at our Leading SAFe training page.
ICAgile certifications do not expire and are issued to students upon successful completion of an ICAgile-accredited course.
If you hold a PMI certification, you can self-report your PDUs to PMI.org with the following suggested breakdown. Hyperdrive is considered a third party provider with PMI, but you can still claim your PDUs without the REP ID. Enter “Scrum Alliance” or “Hyperdrive” manually into the provider cell.

SEUs can be earned in a variety of ways to show your continued proficiency in the fundamental principles and practices of Scrum such as attending a conference, reading a book or volunteering. Please refer to the chart below for SEUs requirements and certification renewal fees. SEUs can be self-claimed on your Scrum Alliance account.

Some advice on landing your first role as a Scrum Master/Product Owner: Like any other role, employers are looking for relevant experience, not just a certification. Though a certification may help set your resume apart from those who don’t have one, networking is key in landing your first role. It’s all about who you know! Try attending meetups and making the right connections to get your foot in the door. Don’t forget to add your new connections on LinkedIn.
You can register for Hyperdrive’s free monthly meetup to expand your network.
Volunteering can also be a great way to gain experience to add to your resume. Silicon Valley Project Management offers volunteer opportunities for those looking to gain experience.
Good luck!
